Toymakers will tell you they won’t sell enough, and movie people will point to the two terrible superheroine movies that were made and say, You see? It can’t be done. It’s stupid, and I’m hoping The Hunger Games will lead to a paradigm shift. It’s frustrating to me that I don’t see anybody developing one of these movies. It actually pisses me off. My daughter watched The Avengers and was like, “My favorite characters were the Black Widow and Maria Hill,” and I thought, Yeah, of course they were. I read a beautiful thing Junot Diaz wrote: “If you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves.
Joss Whedon in an interviewer for The Daily Beast, in which the interviewer asked why he thinks there’s a lack of female superheroes in film (x)

Hospital rebrands chemotherapy as DC-themed “superformula” for kids
Chemotherapy is never fun, but A.C.Camargo Cancer Center in São Paulo is trying to make it easier for children to accept the treatment. They’re rebranding the treatment as “superformula” and using comics to help kids understand chemo.
Buzzfeed’s Copyranter blog explains that the cancer center is working with ad agency JWT, which also works with Warner Bros. The idea was to help children believe in the power of chemotherapy to make them ultimately better. They’re not just covering the chemo cases with superhero logos; they’re also giving pediatric cancer patients comic books in which the heroes experience something similar to cancer and must receive a similar treatment formulated by doctors. And in the comics, the cases for the treatment bags look just like the cases the kids get over their own chemo bags.
Very cool, DC.

Crazy Christmas Spectacular! Okay, last one and then my Geek Gift photo spam will stop. Drinkware! I love these DC superhero drinking glasses and the Ghostbusters mug my parents gave me. The Christmas Vacation moose mug is really cool, but I am a little disappointed at how small the actual mug part is (it’s more like a shot glass) and how hard it is to actually drink out of. I bought the moose mug myself to take to my extended family’s Dirty Santa gift exchange. My plan was to get my own gift, and, aside from it briefly being stolen by my brother-in-law, my plan worked. I had already bought one for myself. I wanted a set of two.
