There are so many good lines in Mark Waid’s review of Man of Steel. While I think (still not sure exactly how I feel about it) I liked the movie a little bit more than him, Mark Waid accurately sums up the biggest problem with this movie.

And I don’t think I blame Zack Snyder for that. I blame Christopher Nolan, the DC/WB execs, and The Dark Knight.

We found a lot of interesting and strange things (antique douche, anyone? We’ve got three!). left behind in our new home. I sold a lot of it at a yard sale last weekend, and we’ve been selling a lot of it on eBay.

I just put one of the strangest up for auction. It’s horrifying. It’s like Gozer or Cthulhu. Shudder.

It’s stupid, and I’m hoping The Hunger Games will lead to a paradigm shift. It’s frustrating to me that I don’t see anybody developing one of these movies. It actually pisses me off. Hospital rebrands chemotherapy as DC-themed “superformula” for kids

Chemotherapy is never fun, but A.C.Camargo Cancer Center in São Paulo is trying to make it easier for children to accept the treatment. They’re rebranding the treatment as “superformula” and using comics to help kids understand chemo.

Buzzfeed’s Copyranter blog explains that the cancer center is working with ad agency JWT, which also works with Warner Bros. The idea was to help children believe in the power of chemotherapy to make them ultimately better. They’re not just covering the chemo cases with superhero logos; they’re also giving pediatric cancer patients comic books in which the heroes experience something similar to cancer and must receive a similar treatment formulated by doctors. And in the comics, the cases for the treatment bags look just like the cases the kids get over their own chemo bags.

Very cool, DC.

My mom found this picture today. It’s my best friend and me from sometime during our senior year of high school. Robbie and I have been friends since middle school. We were roommates in college. He’ll be a groomsmen in my wedding (which is now less than a month away). He’s also my DragonCon partner (though we have expanded our group).

This article makes me sad. The comics industry is going to miss Karen Berger. I’m going to miss Karen Berger. She changed comics. I would argue she is one of the key figures behind the shift from “comics are for kids” to the way we think about comics today. She was an innovator, something sorely lacking in comics these days.

Statements like the one Dan Didio makes in this article illustrate why I buy so few comics these days (when I use to buy a stack every Wednesday). It’s just not the same anymore.

Neil Gaiman explains the bleak outlook for creators like him who benefited from Vertigo.

“It’s really hard to tell at this stage,” said Mr. Gaiman, a best-selling novelist and fiction writer who was scouted by Ms. Berger in the 1980s. “That was DC Comics, now we have DC Entertainment. It is a different beast, being run by different people.”

There’s probably one sixteen-year-old with really geeky, “early adopter” parents who read A Game of Thrones when it first came out. This girl has probably grown up hating this name until now. Now, she hates all these “posers” stealing her name. She had it before HBO made it “popular.”
